How Fast Can Buffalograss Grow From Seed
Some grass types grow faster than others from seed and Buffalograss is well known to be one of the slower to establish types of them all.
Even still I have grown Buffalograss from seed in both cool-season climates and warm-season zones.
I have also successfully grown Buffalo grass from seed starting in May, June, and September.
If you want to know how fast Buffalograss can grow from seed then this video should shed plenty of light.

Is Starter Fertilizer Actually Necessary For Grass Seed?
Переглядів 2,8 тис.28 днів тому
Most of us are led to believe that starter fertilizer is required to plant grass seed and get new grass to grow...but in this video, I explain (and show) how starter fertilizers are not always needed and in many cases, the money spent on fertilizer could be better spent on other amendments. At 7:50 you say that the sulfate is what acidifies the lawn, but this is not true. The reason aluminum sulfate acidifies so quickly is because the aluminum sulfate salt allows Al3+ into the soil solution which can undergo a three step hydrolysis reaction with water, releasing one H+ per step. Sulfate in the soil from aluminum sulfate is no different than that of gypsum or any other sulfate salt fertilizer.

    That was very interesting to see the differences between 'pre-germination' and 'sprouted'. I guess that 'sprouted' actually had a little shock or adjustment to do, but it's really good to see that it really is better to stop the soaking process before the roots get going. It's also nice to learn that cut stolons are planting well for you. (Meanwhile, I'm doing my best to get about 4,000 sq.ft. of invading Common Bermuda grass out of my Buffalo grass lawn using multiple applications of Tenacity, hand-pulling and keeping seed heads mowed and bagged - and I don't even know if this will work - so seeing your Bermuda lawn so close to the Buffalo makes me a little nervous, LOL.)

    Hmmm well definitely checking out the sheep fescue video since that is what I went with for shade mixing with blue grama and buffalo grass, but it sounds like I missed out not considering creeping red. Will definitely try overseeding that in the future and maybe growing a few pots like you have. Also I wonder if anyone sells sample packs of grass seeds for testing purposes ...

    We need more of this Buffalo grass in California. Wish we could phase out Kikuyu. I'd be interested to see how it looks at different mowing lengths, short cut vs. 2" and 3". I imagine at high heights it would only need to be deep watered a few times per month.

    wow, super informative ... so I'm only starting to mark out the areas where I'd like to put in buffalo grass, nowhere ready to clear the soil yet and I have another leveling/re-seeding project(Rye) that I need to get ready for this fall - so with the information given in this video, it sounds best to wait till next year and start the buffalo in April~May for me, as I know I'm not going to get on it right away now - as I'll have to change my way of thinking to 'warm season grass' which won't perform its best in fall~spring like when I put in my cool season grass types

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic 5 днів тому

      thanks Ben, another benefit of waiting on the buffalo through the fall is that you can apply fall weed killers and apply a PE in the Fall (if you'd like) to make for a cleaner slate in April as you get ready for buffalo seeding. By April, you can glyphosate out all remaining cool season grasses after they come out of dormancy and then spread Buffalograss seed the same or next day for a gradual Spring transition. Lots of ways to do it though as you know.

      notgoddess is right, but I didn't say a lot about the long term difference between the two different pre-germ lengths in that video. Long story short, pre-germ until just before the root starts popping out of the seed and spread, don't wait until you see the root unless you are willing to have a lot of seed loss.

      Hmm I also saw thinning in batch where roots accidentally started coming out ... Mine happened end of day 4 which was a surprise. • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic 5 днів тому

      Yeah, I'd be very careful at walking on the buffalo sprouts for the first few weeks. Their early roots are very easily damaged and uprooted. I cut mine for the first time at the end of the first month almost. For the next section of expansion I may be doing a full sprig experiment or possibly self harvested plugs.

    LOL! "Water conservation". Sound like a lefty and need to be treated as such. Trump will deal with you after November. How dare you spread these lies!

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic 5 днів тому

      Ohh, "the lies" of wanting to have a smaller water bill and to comply with local lawn irrigation laws. Keep politics out of the lawn and my channel, you have no clue where I stand, no one on this channel does. Think for yourself Jay, politics aside, do you really want to pay more money for water than you have to? Do you really want to irrigate more often than you need to, and encourage disease in the lawn? Two season ago my neighbors had water wells runing dry due to drought. The rain wasnt coming fast enough to replenish what red and blue families and businesses were using. I don't give a crap about who you're going to vote for this year (or ever), I just want my viewers on this channel to have the ability to maintain a lawn, to the best of their abilities, based on quality information, swayed only by their own preferences and values. You want to waste water for no good reason, go for it, that's your decision so long as you pay your water bill and any local fines you may (or may not) ever incur. Don't ever bring politics onto this channel though; I never have, and I never will, and I don't want them placed here by commenters from any train of thought either. If you do again you will be hidden from this channel forever. I've never done that to anyone before but I won't tolerate it in my comment section.

    • @toomanymarys7355
      @toomanymarys7355 5 днів тому

      That is a really odd comment. In some places, water does need to be conserved, though the truth is that watering is a small proportion of total usage compared to agricultural irrigation, but local water shortages can also require conservation. All of this aside from wasting money!
